Biography
Barbara Pythagoras
“I massage people's souls with my voice.” — an artist shaped by Greek roots, a classical heritage and many years on stages large and small.
The story behind the name
Athens, the conservatory — and Maria Callas
Pythagoras sounds Greek, and that is exactly where it comes from. It is not a stage name but a family name, and it carries a story that still shapes Barbara's music today.
Her grandmother studied classical singing at the conservatory in Athens — together with a fellow student who would become the greatest opera singer of the 20th century: Maria Callas. What the family passed on was not only the memory of those years, but the craft behind them: discipline, breath, phrasing — and the belief that a voice should not impress, but touch.
Born in Wiesbaden to a Greek family from Athens, Barbara Pythagoras grew up with that attitude. It never led her to the opera house, but to gala stages, concert halls and charity evenings — to rooms full of people who want to feel something for one evening.
Path
From band singer to one-woman show
For many years Barbara performed with different bands and developed her own one-woman show, a tribute to the great divas of show business: the soul of Aretha Franklin, the drama of Shirley Bassey, the rock edge of Tina Turner — celebrated in her own unmistakable way.
With songs such as “A Natural Woman”, “Goldeneye”, “Big Spender” and “New York, New York” she fills halls while staying close to the audience: “The size of the audience does not matter — if my voice massages souls, touches hearts and makes the world a little lighter for a moment, then I am happy.”
Alongside the stage she developed a second passion — speaking. Eight published audiobooks, commercials and voice-over productions show a voice that creates images without music.
